Well, this is an anime that took me much longer to watch than it should have. Over a year, in fact. Why? Well let's find out.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners, which is a series that I have watched both subtitled and dubbed, is considered one of the best anime in recent memory. That said, I thought that this show was a mess, let me explain.
Edgerunners has some positives to it and for some people, they might want to watch. With that in mind, I discourage any and all potential viewers, but that should not stop someone from watching, since ultimately, just like Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt and Death Note, the viewer might love these. So without further ado, let us speak of the positives.
The best thing about Edgerunners is the art and atmosphere of the series, which, as typical of Trigger, is done to a very high level standard, with a wide vibrant color palette that is both captivating and easy on the eyes. That said, there is one slight criticism (more of a nitpick, really) that I have with the production and that is the (simulated) lens flare. Lens flare is becoming something of a cliche in the modern era. (Thank you, J. J. Abrams!) Ultimately, though, lens flare adds nothing to a scene and even in a lot of cases, detracts from where the audience's point of focus should be. At least Edgerunners is fairly conservative with lens flare, since it is reserved specifically for scenic shots, so ultimately this does not affect my overall view of the series.
Additionally, the choreography of the action sequences is better than what is considered standard. Take Demon Slayer, for instance, both anime have good art and decent animation, but when it comes to fights, Demon Slayer struggles to keep everything in the frame, which makes the fights sometimes confusing to watch. In this sense, Cyberpunk is better than what I would consider to be the norm from series which depict battles of any sort.
Now that was the good stuff out of Edgrunners, now time for the bad that (spoiler alert) ultimately outweighs it.
